Little Joe is a story about a boy who has to grow up suddenly after the tragic death of his parents, but despite his growth on an emotional level, he is still a little boy who learns important life lessons from his mistakes.

Little Joe is a super fast read. I read it in one day. From its cover, I was expecting a heartbreaking-heartwarming story. A reminiscence of Lassie, if you will. I read the book, but I am sorry to say, that even though I enjoyed reading it, my heart didn’t break nor did it get too warm.

During and after reading Little Joe, I felt like I was back in the 5th or 6th grade, reading a story that teaches kids good morals. As I read it, I couldn’t help to feel like I had to pay attention to details, as if I would be tested after finishing the book.

Since it felt like a school read; one I would have read back in my elementary years, I would consider this to be children’s book. I would only edit the part where he finds the condoms (detail I found unnecessary and useless for the story) and only leave that he found the gun.

This book is a good read but it left me feeling like I read the synthesis of the story. I think the author has a good plot, but what I read lacked more feelings, soul-touching details and words to make you really feel emotionally involved into the story. Don’t want to spoil too much but the consequences of little Joe’s acts were not serious even though what he did was more than serious. I also would have enjoyed to read more about the grandparent’s feelings and how they dealt with their loss and adjusting their lives to their grandson’s needs. They were portrayed too responsible, serious and in a way careless of little Joe’s feelings.

If you are in the mood for a simple fast little story about a boy in a small town this is the book for you.
